RBC and West Jet announced today they are creating Ampli, a next generation loyalty platform that will deliver unparalleled value to consumers through amplified earning power on a simple and convenient digital solution. Open to all Canadians, Ampli will provide members with merchant offers, flexible rewards and exclusive bonuses. In addition, members who spend on RBC cards and fly with West Jet will further amplify their rewards. Ampli brings RBC and West Jet, who are already partners on the West Jet RBC World Elite Master Card, together in a unique alliance that will complement their existing proprietary loyalty offerings. Through Ampli, other top Canadian brands will also have the opportunity to deepen their engagement with consumers. “The Canadian loyalty landscape is ready for disruption, and Ampli is a fundamental shift in the business model,” said Dave Mc Kay, President and CEO of RBC. “We are bringing together top Canadian brands to help them reach consumers more efficiently and effectively. We will also provide consumers with opportunities to earn rewards and save money like never before.” Over the coming months, additional merchant partners will be announced. “We’re delighted to partner with RBC on this new venture. With Ampli, we can provide greater value to the millions of our combined customers by leveraging the power of the platform to deliver personal and relevant offers,” said Ed Sims, President and CEO of the West Jet Group of Companies. “Moreover, Ampli will provide the ability to better serve our guests and help West Jet fly even more premium travellers.” Ampli will debut later this year. Enhanced in early 2016, the West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a companion travellers dream. The card for Canada's second largest airline and its relatively young rewards program is definitely suited to a wide ranging amount of Canadians who can utilize its benefits. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard is the co-brand card for the West Jet Rewards frequent flyer program. The card issued by RBC has been around for several years now and has always been a decent travel rewards card option for West Jet travel. It is the ideal card for individuals who travel on West Jet regularly and for couples or families who travel on West Jet at least once per year. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard comes with a $99 Annual fee which is lower than most of its competitors that offer a similar level of rewards and benefits. Supplementary cards run $49 which is the essentially the same as the majority of the Infinite/Platinum/Gold travel credit card offerings from other banks. The interest rate on the card is 19.99% which is also in line with most of the cards at this level. Income requirements for the card are $70,000 Personal or $120,000 Household. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard has two earn rates associated with it. If you use the card for West Jet or West Jet Vacations purchases you'll earn 2% of those values in West Jet dollars. All other eligible purchases made on the card earn 1.5% in West Jet dollars. That essentially makes this a 1.5% return card on the majority of your purchases save for those directly made with West Jet or West Jet vacations. West Jet Rewards is a nice simple frequent flyer program to wrap your head around. One West Jet dollar is the equivalent to one Canadian dollar when you redeem for West Jet flights or vacation packages. You can use that as 25 dollars towards any West Jet ticket to save you money no matter the cost of the ticket. If that ticket is $300 before taxes and you have 300 West Jet dollars you can redeem for the full amount meaning that ticket is essentially free as you still have to pay for taxes and fees. At this time West Jet dollars cannot be used towards taxes and fees. Perhaps this is something they will add in the future seeing that a big competitor of theirs now offers that option. If you have used flexible point programs like TD Visa's travel anywhere benefit or American Express' Use Points for Purchases before for travel than the West Jet program should be easy for you to use as it mimics these programs. Essentially West Jet is taking the best of two worlds, a frequent flyer program and a travel anywhere credit card program and combining them into one program. Unlike competing programs here in Canada, West Jet Rewards only has a few a redemption options as we mentioned above, flights and vacation packages. But that is what an airline program is meant to be. Right now you can redeem for any West Jet flight including their code shares on partner airlines like American Airlines and Delta so long as it has a West Jet flight number and issued as a West Jet ticket. This means you can use your West Jet dollars to fly most places in North America, Sun destinations like Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America as well as on West Jet's flights to Europe. The West Jet RBC World Elite Master Card has some great features and benefits that are particularly useful to those who travel on West Jet. The first well known benefit is the first checked bag free option. When you hold the West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you and up to 8 guest travelling on the same reservation can each check your first bag for free. And you don't even have to purchase the tickets on your West Jet RBC World Mastercard! So long as you are a cardholder which will be identified by your West Jet Rewards number you can take advantage of this benefit. The second and also the biggest benefit that this card also comes with is a very strong companion voucher ticket offer that is available annually. Prior to March 2016 this offer was limited to Canada and the Continental U. but that was expanded to be able to use on any West Jet operated flight. The way it works is that when you purchase one ticket with West Jet you can get a companion ticket for as a little as $99. Here are the annual companion ticket options (prices don’t include taxes, fees and charges): What does this mean? Well it means it can save a crap load of money when you travel as the beauty of the voucher is that it works on any fare class at anytime with no blackouts. So you could book a more expensive Plus Fare to London and get your companion in Plus as well for only $399! For example take middle of July busy season flights to London Gatwick from Calgary: the Plus Fare is $2,074 before taxes and fees. That means the companion fare at $399 will save you $1,675!! Don't forget that you can also use any and all of your West Jet dollars towards the first person's fare to save even more money! Finally the card also has a strong insurance package that places it in the middle of the road with its competitors. It includes emergency medical insurance (15 days for those 64 and under; 3 days for 65 ), travel accident insurance, trip interruption insurance, hotel and rental car insurance. Plus it also has extended warranty and purchase protection There are four major items that are good about this card. Used the right way it can save you tons of money on a West Jet trip every year. Finally the fourth item that makes this card appealing is the annual fee, its only $99. Secondly is the first checked bag benefit at a savings of $25 a pop. That's $21 to $51 lower than many of this card's direct competitors and in that first year you get the $250 and whatever other savings you get from the companion voucher and free bag benefit. There are just a few things that are not so good about this card. I have travelled at times with a group of 6 people on West Jet, so right there on a round trip flight that would save $300 if buying the lowest fare class. First is the earn rate, at 1.5% on the majority of purchases there are cards out there that compete with this one that will give you 2% back or even more and those cards don't limit you to redeeming on West Jet only. The 2% back on West Jet purchases is decent but you can get that on the American Express Gold Rewards Cards as well and then have many more redemption options to use that 2% reward you earned. The second issue we have with the card is more so with the West Jet Rewards program and not the card itself but being a co-brand card these go hand in hand! That issue is your limited redemption options in terms of where you can fly. This card has been awarded the best travel card for Canadians by other websites and publications but we have difficulty with that designation as it can't get you to every corner of the globe like other cards nor can it get you into business class or first class seats.... Seeing that you can only redeem on West Jet coded flights you are limited to redeeming for economy or Plus flights within Canada, to the U. S., to Sun destinations and their three (at time of publishing) cities in Europe. You can't fly to Australia, Asia, Africa or many other destinations with West Jet Rewards. Now we say 'yet' because West Jet's partnerships with other airlines are expanding. For example they teamed with Qantas for reciprocal earning but when the announcement came out they also said that redemption will come in 2017. When that happens you'll be able to use West Jet dollars to fly on Qantas and chances are even in Business or First Class. As is always the case it depends on your travel habits! If you travel on West Jet then in most cases the card will make sense but not always. If you are a solo traveller who only flies West Jet once or twice per year you are better off getting a credit card that offers a higher return such as the mbna Rewards World Elite Mastercard as you'll earn more miles on your purchases that you can still redeem on West Jet flights. Being a solo traveller you won't make use of the companion voucher so you are better off with that higher earn elsewhere. However if you travel at least once a year with two or more people or as a single traveller frequently with checked baggage on West Jet then the card is a no-brainer as you can make use of the companion voucher and the first checked bag free benefits to save you a ton of cash. On the flip side if you travel to places that West Jet doesn't serve or their partners like Qantas don't serve the card doesn't make much sense. Well for the $99 annual fee you get the 250 West Jet dollar sign up bonus. That being said, at a minium if you know you are going to fly West Jet at least once, and you can even be that solo traveller we mention earlier you may want to get the card just to save on that one flight. This means you can save $151 on that one West Jet flight and then cancel the card. Don't tell them that we told you to do this though! ;-)Overall this card makes great sense for a lot of Canadians who foresee themselves travelling on West Jet at least once per year with a companion or a few times per year individually. The benefits the card comes with are really second to none as no other card has a companion voucher offer like this and very few have a checked bag benefit. When you get this card it isn't so much the West Jet dollars you earn on your everyday spending even though they will add up it is about those two huge benefits it comes with. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a relatively straightforward card attached to a straightforward loyalty program. It’s for people who travel on West Jet, and the card has some potentially compelling value. This card has an annual fee of $119 (up from $99 in November 2017). The supplementary card fee is $59, but keep in mind that the checked bag benefit and companion fare voucher are only for the primary cardholder. As a 1-time sign-up bonus, you get 250 West Jet dollars. Every year, shortly after your sign-up anniversary date (and including the initial sign-up), you get an annual companion fare of $99 plus taxes and fees (which can add up to more than $99 dollars on their own) within Canada and the continental USA. This means that you have to pay the normal price for 1 ticket, but pay the $99 plus taxes and fees for your travelling companion (who can be anybody). The companion fare also applies to destinations outside of Canada and the continental USA but for a higher price: $299 plus taxes and fees to Hawaii, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean; and $399 plus taxes and fees for all other West Jet destinations. With the card, you get the first checked bag free for the primary cardholder and up to 8 companions on the same flight. This applies to flights wholly operated by West Jet, not code share flights. The first checked bag usually costs at least $30 per flight direction, which really adds up on multiple flights and multiple travellers. You earn 1.5% back in West Jet dollars on non-West Jet purchases made on the card, and 2.0% back in West Jet dollars on West Jet purchases (flights and West Jet Vacations packages). West Jet dollars can be redeemed in any amount over 15 West Jet dollars against the base fare of a flight, including code share flights. They can also be used for Member Exclusive fares, which I’ll explain shortly. I’ve had this card for a few years, and personally I think it’s worth keeping the card beyond the first year if you fly at least a few times per year. With that minimum travel frequency, you can still keep your options open to fly on other airlines who might have a cheaper flight or more desirable route. (I always check options with a tool such as Google Flights first.) After all, you don’t want to choose a more expensive flight or one with less desirable timing or stopovers just so you can “benefit” from the card. If you don’t travel frequently, then you can always cancel the card after the first year and then consider re-applying in advance of your next flight. Just plan far enough in advance, since it can take 4-6 weeks after your first purchase on the card to get the West Jet dollars welcome bonus and companion voucher. If you’re a super frequent West Jet traveller, you might already be getting some of the main card benefits such as free checked bags and companion vouchers. The West Jet credit card is not as popular as Aeroplan-affiliated cards, not just because Air Canada is the bigger airline and Aeroplan is the bigger flight network, but also because 1) there are just so many other Aeroplan-affiliated cards; and 2) there are more ways to earn and convert to Aeroplan points. Compared to Aeroplan / Air Canada cards, I think the West Jet card is more generous. For example, with the lower Aeroplan-affiliated cards, you get the first checked bag free on rewards flights only. With the higher end Aeroplan-affiliated cards, you get the first checked bag free on all flights (up to a maximum cap in 1 case), but only for the primary cardholder. However, with Aeroplan it’s easier to accumulate many points fast by signing up for multiple credit cards with generous sign-up bonuses. If you’re under 65 years of age, the card provides out of province and country emergency medical insurance for trips of up to 15 days long; or for 3 days if you’re 65 or older. There is also flight delay insurance, hotel/motel burglary insurance, car rental insurance, and more. A missing travel insurance is trip cancellation insurance. West Jet’s Member Exclusive fares are available to West Jet members in general — it’s not a feature specific to the credit card. However, it’s worth mentioning since you must be a West Jet member to benefit from the credit card, and having the card helps you to earn West Jet dollars. In short, you can sometimes get much more than a $1 per West Jet dollar value when using Member Exclusive fares. Member Exclusive fares are a bit of an under-advertised feature because West Jet doesn’t publicly post an “award chart”. You can see a bit of a breakdown in this blog post. I’ve definitely found that the hidden award chart is not a fixed number of dollars — certain flights and dates are more than the minimums listed in that post. With Member Exclusive fares, you must have enough West Jet dollars to cover the entire 1-way fare (excluding taxes and fees) — in other words, you cannot do partial redemptions, although the fares are split into 1-way segments. For example, you must have at least 125 West Jet dollars in your account if the Member Exclusive fare is $125 (before taxes and fees). These fares sometimes provide great value, but the system runs a bit contrary to the simplicity of the West Jet dollars system; outside of these fares, you can apply any number of West Jet dollars against your travel. The lack of a fixed award chart probably prevents this from being a more popular feature as well. An unexpected benefit I’ve used is that you get 3 cents off per litre at Petro-Canada gas stations if you link your West Jet credit card to your Petro-Points card. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard has a minimum personal income of $80,000 or a minimum household income of $150,000. If you don’t meet these requirements or don’t want to pay such a high annual fee, you can consider the West Jet RBC Mastercard (basically, the non World Elite version), which has a $39 annual fee, a 50 West Jet dollars welcome bonus, and a 1.5% West Jet purchases / 1.0% “everything else” earn rate. It doesn’t have a “free checked bag” benefit or annual companion fare. After the first year of using this card, I felt a bit uneasy about continuing to pay for it. Sometimes a West Jet flight makes sense, and sometimes a different flight makes sense. However, especially with a few flights per year for my business, I’ve been able to factor in the card’s benefits when deciding which flights to take. The card has so far realized more than enough value for me to keep holding it.

When you use Virtual Visa Debit to make a payment: a) The merchant performs an authorization on your personal deposit account at the time of the purchase and this authorization amount is immediately debited from that account. This process is followed by a settlement, typically 2-5 business days after authorization, which finalizes the amount of the purchase and, in some cases, reflects adjustments to the initial authorization amount. When this happens, a credit adjustment in the amount of the original authorization will be credited to your account, followed immediately by a debit adjustment that reflects the final settlement amount of your purchase. b) The funds are debited from your personal deposit account, which is the account you access with your RBC Royal Bank Client Card when you select the “Chequing” option on a point-of-sale terminal or at an ATM. If the account linked to the primary chequing position on your Client Card is changed before a payment has been settled, it may impact the processing of that payment if the merchant needs to adjust the initial authorization amount. The final settlement amount will be processed on the account that is linked to the primary chequing position on your Client Card at the time of settlement, even if a different account was debited for the authorization amount. Please see your RBC Royal Bank Virtual Visa Debit Agreement for further details. Debit transactions made using your Virtual Visa Debit Number do not count against any monthly transaction limits applicable to your personal deposit account. For most transactions, the authorization amount debited by the merchant at the time of purchase will be adjusted at settlement to reflect changes in the applicable exchange rate.
